Nokia 5800 Firmware v40

Kinetic scrolling! Qwerty auto-rotation! Performance boosts! New home screen!

Finally, firmware version 40 arrived for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. And there's a good reason to dig up the good old annoyances and bugs list and give it an overhaul. Do check it out :)

The following is a short review of added/fixed functionality on the Nokia 5800 as well as some things that Nokia managed to fuck up with the new firmware.

Kinetic scrolling. Without doubt the most anticipated feature on the 5800, which only had a tiny scroll bar that was hardly usable because of the phone's edges.
* The good? It's fast, and it works virtually everywhere, even in the soft key menus.
* The bad? It doesn't work in the main (Symbian) or applications menu, or in notifications with scroll bars. I don't understand why though. It also breaks some applications that don't expect their content to scroll.
* The ugly? Well, they left the old scroll bar in, needlessly taking up space, which could be better used for check boxes, for more efficient selecting/marking of multiple items in a list. Now, you still need to use the menu. Also, it works in many cases where no scrolling is needed (because every item is visible, e.g. where you select the items you wish to see on the home screen).

New 5530-style home screen. Also something many people were dying for. Especially the ones that actually use their phone to call and text and check up on their friends. I'm not that kind of person :) I personally lament the bad and the ugly as described below, and stick to the shortcut view (even though only four shortcuts are available).
* The good? Now you can control your music from the home screen _and_ see your contacts _and_ have more than four (scroll horizontally) _and_ still have shortcuts to your favourite apps.
* The bad? The "contact screen" has no calendar view. But I guess it's either time management or friends, right? Still only four possibly shortcuts to apps. The music widget crashes easily (if you press forward when only playing one song, for instance).
* The ugly? The contact and music widgets appear on an ugly grey background (should be transparent) and the contacts font is jagged. On the bottom of the screen, two soft key-style buttons appear for contacts and the dialler. But they also look plain ugly and break the phone's style. Solution? Get a non-default theme. For instance on this dailymobile thread.

Keyboard rotation. Whenever you turn the phone in landscape mode, you will switch to full qwerty/azerty/qwertz/whatever-layout. Back in portrait mode, the T9-style keyboard will be available. Sheer logic, but it took Nokia over a year to implement.
* The good? It's fast, intuitive and works flawlessly.
* The bad or ugly? None. Although I can still moan about some more general issues with text input on the Nokia 5800.

New Real Player version. They do not mention what actually changed in this Real Player version, but I noticed a few things: The screen does no longer go black when you're streaming audio and lock the phone. It used to make the controls unavailable (the only way to summon them back, was to use the remote control).
* The good? Probably bug and stability fixes.
* The bad? It's still shit. Pauses streaming audio when no longer foregrounded (and there's no decent alternative to listen to audio streams like internet radio). No equaliser, or any of the functionality the music player offers.
* The ugly? Should be integrated in one media player, really.

New alarm and incoming call screens when the screen is locked. When your phone is on standby, it will now display a gorgeous screen when the alarm is triggered or when you have a call. It neatly states what's going on and gives two options: For alarm: snooze (slide to the left) or stop alarm (slide to the right), for incoming calls: answer (slide to the left) or unlock the phone to do something else (slide to the right).
* The good? No more accidental muting alarms/picking up calls with your thigh when the phone is in your pocket. The sliding works very well, too. And it looks very slick!
* The ugly? Style-break with the rest of the phone. As in: the rest of the phone should look like this.

New Upgrade SW application. The "Update applications" apps has been renamed, got a few buttons extra and looks slightly slicker.
* The good? Well. Nothing big really. I guess it's slightly more user-friendly.
* The bad? Still no manual update of the repositories possible. It updates only once every 24 hours, no matter how often you start and shut down the application.

Other features. Nokia obviously tweaked around a bit with other stuff. Most of it will go undiscovered because they're changes under the hood. Whatever I find, I will list here.
* Ovi Contacts pre-installed. I personally don't care too much for this, but if it does not hit performance, why not.
* Faster. Yes, again the phone seems to be faster and more responsive.
* Better touch screen sensitivity. This may be imaginary.
* More stable. This I've just read somewhere. I guess that with better memory usage (probably tweaks for better responsiveness), less crashes occur. Although the Ovi store already crashed on me in the first 2 minutes.
* Switch Phone is now under settings. True, it was a bit hard to find.
* Some new icons here and there. Waste of time.
* When typing full-size qwerty, the pop-up letters indicating which character you hit, have become slightly bigger. Waw.
* The "system tray" (right upper corner) menu now highlights where you tap. Still looks a bit silly with those red underlined links to for instance bluetooth or wifi connection. There's no need to use hyperlink-style buttons here.
* Download! application made way for the Ovi store. Ovi Store integration is still sad though: From the Symbian menu, there is still the soft menu option to "Download applications" which takes you to the bookmark section of the web browser, which has a bookmark to "download applications", which then sends you to the web version of Ovi Store, which then opens the Ovi Store app (which really is a web app). Go figure.

Overall impression of this firmware update? I never thought using the good, the bad and the ugly could be such a help in describing both functionality and usability problems with hardware. :) So with the help of this trinity, I present my final impression:
* The good? A lot of usable improvements made working with this phone easier, faster and more fun and give it a chance of surviving another year in smartphone land. Furthermore, Nokia is showing its customers that it cares, which most definitely is a good way to bind customers to your company.
* The bad? Some things feel like they're never going to change. Every time a firmware update is done, I need to hard reset the phone (several times even) because one feature or the other will have magically disappeared. This time, I haven't managed to get my e-mail widget back on the shortcuts home screen. And I'm not alone. Still no internet radio player (how long can it take them to convert the s60v3 one to touch?)
* The ugly? Actually, this is a bad too, but it dwells in the realms of usability and style. I feel like a guinea pig. Every firmware update for this phone works as a test case for one new feature or the other, seeing how people will receive this or that. But it is never consistently implemented (neither looks nor functionality) and it never gives us what we all want (even though a loud opinion exists on blogs and sites all over the net). Secondly but relatedly, the phone feels pieced together but lacks an overall usable interface still.

Nokia 5800 v20.0.012 changelog

Nokia released its v20.0.012 patch which was available since Monday, 9 February 2009. The following list is a changelog I composed based on my own experience, and from users on Tweakers.net, AllaboutSymbian.com and Dailymobile.se.

Updated on 11-FEB-2009

General
+ Faster operation, speed improvements for Java apps as well.
+ the theme effects are much more supple now. Menus don't flicker after opening any more. Still slowing the phone down though.
+ file browser is much faster
+ touchscreen is less sensitive when locked (i.e. when the buttons come available despite the lock e.g. when an alarm goes), and a little more sensitive in normal unlocked use. An adjustment control is still desirable though.
+ new icons
+ You can now edit what gets shown on the "Shorcuts bar" home screen. i.e should it show search, music player, calendar, radio etc. Sadly not yet available in the "contacts" view :(
+ Search on the home screen is now "search internet and my content", Google Search added as a service
+ WLAN problems seem to be gone. Previously I could only connect to my neighbour's, not my own. Also, the browser does no longer hang when using WLAN.
+ Much faster screen rotation.
+ Battery seems to last longer.
+ HelloOx hack still works
+ QWERTY/QWERTZ-bug now fixed
+ Some visual improvements: bigger tabs, slightly bigger buttons on the dialer.
? Messaging seems less likely to crash when retrieving emails (if set to auto-retrieval, when you previously double clicked on an email to actually download it, Messaging would crash 9 times out of 10 unless you previously had connected to the mailbox)

Camera
+ Geo-Tagging support for both camera and the video recorder.
+ "use secondary camera" option in camera's menu, probably to use the front-side camera
+ Camera seems to process images faster. Initial impressions on image quality are: it's the same

Multimedia
+ multimedia bar now shows that a program is active, even if the program was not started over the bar itself
+ music player now reacts much quicker to remote control keypresses and it's become to adjust volume through the remote control
+ multimedia bar is now skinnable
+ Voice recorded files now show up in the Sounds folder in the Gallery.
+ Better bass reproduction.
+ Podcasts menu is added to the player.

Applications
+ Skype N96 edition now works on S60v5
+ Zoom, Full Screen and Pan options for Flash video. Flash video also has a DPAD now.
+ New Applications: Software Update, Dictionary (with incremental search and up to three languages)

Some severe new problems reported
* Updating over the air will likely randomise your lock code, leaving you clueless as to what it is (if you had enabled and changed it to something other than the default). Resolution: update again over the USB cable with Nokia's software updater.
* Someone reports: Blasted "screen randomly changing hue" bug is back. I saw this in V10 but it was ok in V11. What happens is the buttons, images, basically everything on the screen takes on a purple / green / red tinge, like there's a screen malfunction, except the network and battery indicators remain perfectly white. It comes and goes on its own... damned annoying!

Nokia 5800 annoyances

Updated list of my Nokia 5800 annoyances - despite it being a very good phone. I'm also sure they can be easily fixed with a firmware update.

Updated 18-JAN-2010

Music Player, Realplayer & Radio
* When using the 'find' option in the music player, typing a few characters and then pressing and holding backspace will ask you to delete the currently selected file (if one is selected) when the cursor reaches the beginning. Obvious bug FIXED!
* Shuffle and repeat should be available without digging into the menu (toggle by touching the icons on-screen)
* Skip, pause, play should be readily available, wherever you are in the System. Now you still need to navigate to the music player. FIXED!
* An iTunes-style option to level the volume of songs. Nothing is more annoying than having Judas Priest destroy your ears because you increased the volume to hear the words of a softer previous song.
* When you press 'play' on the headset, the player should just start (or the radio, depending on what was used most recently) and start to play, as was the case with the Nokia 5310.
* The equaliser is not available when streaming files with Realplayer.
* Songs show up in the ringtone list and vice-versa.
* Realplayer does not play in the background
* Realplayer lacks connection prioritisation
* Radio does not auto-resume after another application used the audio channel. The music player usually does. Fixed in v20.0.012

Home Screen & Media bar
* There is no landscape mode for the home screen, that's a bit silly if you have it on the table stand.
* The homescreen and the mediabar should have a "menu" button that brings up the Symbian Menu. Having to press the physical white button is such an anticlimax in your touchscreen experience.
* Why not have four contacts of your choice PLUS four favourite programs PLUS the calendar? The screen is big enough to display a combination of the Shortcut Homescreen and the Contact Homescreen and much more!
* If you launched a program (such as the music player) via the menu (ie. not via the media bar), then the media bar will show no indication that the program is open (little ball in the right upper corner of the icon). This is the case if you start the player from the media bar. Fixed in v20.0.012

Calendar, alarm, clock
* Adding birthdays to contacts is useless as they do not show up in the calendar. Also the anniversary option in the calendar does not provide an alternative, since it does not show the person's age.
* Adding a memo/calendar item/meeting/... through handwriting can be a pain when you get to entering the time. You have to wait until every number is recognised and transferred to the application. If you write too fast, you will overwrite the previous character you've entered. Clear bug. Fixed in v20.0.012
* When I open the calendar, I regularly get an error message: "alarms missed due to time change", which is not the case. Seems to be fixed in v20.0.012

General
* The phone often crashes (some lines + auto reboot) very often (if not always) when the focus is stolen from some applications such as Fring and the France24-player. This happens for instance when someone calls while using one of those applications, or after the call, or when receiving a message. Biggus buggus! SEEMS TO BE OK MOST OF THE TIME NOW
* The remote control (on the headset) has a phone button. This should only work to pick up the phone or hang up, but pressing it will also change the channel on the radio player and song on the music player. The worst thing is, that this cannot be prevented by "locking" the remote control.
* Selecting/Marking items in a list could be easy on a touchscreen by simply adding checkboxes. Now I still need to use the menu for every item.
* Scrolling through large lists is a pain, especially without the stylus. Is there a decent solution for this? KINETIC SCROLLING TOOK CARE OF THIS SINCE v40
* Popup-notifications should disappear on touching them, so they don't interrupt interaction for such a long time (old annoyance with Nokia)
* It's still impossible to copypaste from the browser. Copypaste should also be available in every menu (over right click for instance), such as the menu where you enter your wireless key. :)
* Right-click (touching and holding to show a context menu) should be available more often and could take some of the load from the soft key menus.
* No way to handwrite hyphens, even though they're pretty common in European languages.
* Not every programme has a landscape mode (such as the calculator and the dialler).
* Touch sensitivity should be configurable.
* The notification light (the white menu button that blinks slowly when you have a new message) should blink a little quicker/more often, as you usually don't stare for five seconds at your phone to see if you have any messages FIXED
* Theme effects flicker. When an animation (such as a toast menu that slides into the screen) comes to an end, the menu will disappear shortly and reappear. This is irritating when you're trying to work quickly and also it looks crap. I guess that's why Nokia disabled them by default. Fixed in v20.0.012
* I miss an option to synchronise the notes I made on my phone. I should be able to quickly access whatever I've been musing on in the train on my pc, so I can start writing. Notes can be backed-up, but not synced. Fixed in v20.0.012
* The accelerometer is way too sensitive, which leads to significant delays. For instance, when the Berlin subway gathers speed, my phone will sometimes think it's being held upright and change its view. Apparently this has been fixed in a new firmware update, which sadly isn't available to me yet. Fixed in v20.0.012

Calling, Messaging & Contacts
* The messaging app often crashes upon opening or retrieving e-mail SEEMS TO BE OK
* Bring back 'recently used contact'. The Nokia 5310 had a memory of the ten contacts you wrote messages to or that called you or that you called. It also had the possibility to have one favourite contact (which was great as I text one special person quite often).
* Language setting per contact. Wouldn't it be great if you could say: my girlfriend speaks French, so that when I text her, the T9 text predicition will change automatically to French.
* Incremental search in the contact browser was a good idea. However, the keys jump around too much, so you can't really use it in a quick manner. It'd be much easier if the keys kept their position as you type, and if any gaps were filled with new letters. Or even better: T9-Style searching through the contact list, as on Sony Ericsson's phones.
* Writing a smiley in a message is a pain: You need to go to the special characters tab to write ':-' and then press shift to have your ')', and then back to your alphabet tab. This should be easier, for instance with a smiley tab or something similar. You can already circumvene this by using handwriting shortcuts, but that's not much of a solace when you're using the fullscreen keyboard.
* If the system tray reports a new e-mail, it is impossible to see it if you're in the browser environment. The messaging app opens but switches back immediately to the browser.
* There is no way to save multiple bluetooth attachments at once
* There is no efficient way to leave the messaging app without quitting it (in order not to break off Mailbox connection). Implement a "Hide" button like with podcasting, Fring and other apps, which leaves the app running in the background.
* Deleting an e-mail from e.g. a Gmail account will thereafter take me to the oldest mail (scrolling all the way down) in the mailbox, instead of the most recent.
* E-mail lacks a reply-all function
* Adding a birthday to a contact, will crash the contacts application. Fixed in v20.0.012

Connectivity & Web
* Network prioritisation should be available in every program and every service. Also, you should be given the option to switch to GPRS when the WiFi connection drops (for instance, when you leave home).
* RSS feeds do not always work (sometimes it says: format error) MORE FORMATS ARE SUPPORTED

Search App
* The search app sometimes does not find songs the first time. You need to search the web first, then return and it will search again, finding the song. Very reproduceable. FIXED
* Since v.20.0.012, the search app has improved immensely. However, it opens songs that were found in its own instance of the music player, instead of in the music player itself. This may be a feature, but it's also annoying because it means you cannot search for other things when listening to the song you've found.

Camera
* The camera will refuse function after a few times use. The seeker will only display a black image. When you then press the button to shoot, it will take a few seconds and then tell you "error" and to restart the phone. Very reproduceable, seems to coincide with video player no longer showing picture, only music. Update: this seems mostly the case when you used the Barcode reader application (and rotated the phone resp. made the UI rotate). THIS WAS A PROBLEM WITH MY PHONE ONLY, IT WAS REPLACED
